- Birmingham had the highest rate of child poverty in the UK (28.9 % which when housing costs rises to 42.33 %).
- Birmingham had the highest infant mortality and levels of childhood obesity in the UK.
- 28% of Birmingham's population has no formal qualifications.
- The number of Birmingham families using food banks had increased by 500% over the previous year.
Equally shocking is that, given the above the UK government has no strategic plan on how to promote the best interests of All children of Birmingham. Instead, it relies on a cash-starved local authority to provide the bare minimum services to those children who are most in need. Furthermore, Birmingham city council had no strategic plan which involved promoting the needs of all the children in Birmingham.
ABC seeks to address this situation by working with citizens, organisations, public servants, elected officials and local businesses to campaign for all the children of Birmingham to be celebrated for simply being children. Birmingham is a garret city: it can and should be doing much more to recognise its children. We believe that a campaign focused on promoting the best interests of ALL children in Birmingham, with no child excluded our left out, will enrich the social fabric of our great city and will benefit children and adults alike.
